The NSLC is one Canadian retailer in the cross hairs of an American group of alcohol producers. The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States says the NSLC’s markup of American spirits is “discriminatory”. In a 77-page report to the office of the U.S. Trade Representative the group complains the NSLC only marks up Nova Scotia spirits 50 to 80 per cent and imported products by 160 per cent. The group says this practice flies in the face of the United States-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement and World Trade Organization rules. The report also complains about similar practices in other Maritime provinces along with Alberta and Saskatchewan.
