Bridgewater Mayor David Mitchell has spent time participating in conferences in Europe and Western Canada, including the U7 International Mayors Summit in France and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference in Edmonton. This follows a visit to Ottawa at the end of May.
In France, Mitchell signed a document developed through the Urban 7 network linked to G7 municipal engagement. The declaration outlines policy themes including ecological transition and climate resilience. Mitchell also travelled to Edmonton to attend a conference with three other representatives from Bridgewater.
Councillor Whynott said at last night's Council meeting how impressed he was at sessions around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion items and how Artificial intelligence can help the Town of Bridgewater.
These trips reflect a growing amount of time Mayor Mitchell is spending in national and international policy forums, raising questions about balance and focus, particularly at a time when residents continue to expect progress on core local responsibilities such as road maintenance, infrastructure upkeep and day‑to‑day service delivery.
The expansion of Mitchell's involvement in international and national policy discussions raises ongoing questions about the tangible return on time and public resources invested in conference participation. A detailed public breakdown has yet to be released on the total cost of Mitchell's participation in the France summit, the Edmonton conference, or the trip to Ottawa.
