Nova Scotians are being advised to review their private health insurance policies to determine if a doctor's or nurse practitioner's note is still necessary for services like massages, physiotherapy, or chiropractic care. Chances are, it’s not. The Department of Health and Wellness reported that doctors frequently receive "several requests a day for referrals to physiotherapists, massage therapists, or chiropractors." They emphasized, "You likely don't need one. Help free up doctors' time by going directly to the allied health professional." In response to concerns about needing a referral for insurance coverage, the department clarified that less than 10 percent of private health plans in Nova Scotia actually require a referral.
