Nova Scotia's Department of Community Services is working to improve social worker caseloads involving children and families at risk. Shelley Bent James, an executive director with the department, acknowledges that the current average of 22.75 cases per social worker is inaccurate due to incomplete paperwork. The department is implementing a pilot program to reduce administrative tasks and provide more direct time with children and families. Additionally, they are developing a recruitment and retention plan to increase the number of social workers in the province.
