Patients in need of an MRI soon will not have to travel as far to receive the diagnostic imaging service. South Shore Regional Hospital unveiled its new MRI machine late last week. It is the only MRI suite on the South Shore and hospital staff say in its first year it will serve 3,000 patients. Stephen Rombik, the Western Zone Director for Diagnostic Imaging says he feels in the second year that could climb to 5,000 patients a year, “Our goal is to reach approximately 5,000 a year. I think that is reasonable in year two. We continue to push those numbers, as we can.” Right now the province has about 20,000 patients waiting for MRIs. The South Shore MRI suite will begin seeing patients during the last week of June.
