The federal government has announced that lobster fishers in Lobster Fishing Areas (LFAs) 33 and 34 will now be able to keep Jonah crab, brought up in their lobster pots as bycatch, as bait. Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson made the announcement while in Nova Scotia this week, saying the use of the Jonah crab will help ease concerns among harvesters about access to reliable bait. The use of Jonah crab as bait has been in practice for many years in LFAs 34 through 38.
